Three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, stamped in gilt, hinges and extremities lightly rubbed, a few small scratches to front and rear corners; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed; matching marbled endpapers; by MacDonald, N.Y.; old gift inscription in pencil at head of half-title; scattered spotting to text; original cloth bound in at rear. First American edition, comprising sheets of the suppressed 1865 English printing of Alice, here with a new title-page. The first issue by Macmillan in London was cancelled at the last minute by Caroll due to the poor printing quality of the illustrations by Tenniel. The remaining unbound sheets were then sold to Appleton in New York and issued with a new title-page.
