Hand-painted in polychrome on silk, "GAR" above emblazoned American Eagle with bannerette inscribed, "E. Puribus Unum" with another bannerette inscribed, "Second Regiment Cavalry" below, mounted to silk fabric.

Founded by President Andrew Jackson in 1836 as the Second Regiment of Dragoons of the U.S. Army, the Regiment was redesignated in 1861 as the Second Cavalry Regiment. The 2nd Cavalry Regiment played a key role in the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac and was involved in many of the most significant battles of the conflict: Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor.
The consignor believes that the quality, materials and techniques of the painting used on this standard strongly suggest that it was created by the same hands that made the Civil War Regimental standards.
