The Buddha seated in dhyanasana, the canopy with the seven-naga-headed hood of the serpent-king Muchalinda, a wheel carved in low relief verso; modern stand.
H: 16 in. (stone)The figure of Buddha seated sheltered beneath a canopy of a multi-headed cobra, refers to a story where the Buddha, meditating at the sacred center of Bodhgaya, was caught in a week-long rainstorm. The serpent-king Muchalinda, impressed by the Buddha's meditation under adverse circumstances, protected the Buddha with his own body.
