Roberts began his career as Assistant District Attorney of Philadelphia County from 1901 to 1904, and served as a Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania until 1918. He was a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania from 1921 to 1924 and a Trustee of Jefferson Medical College. He served as a Supreme Court Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1945.
