Sellers was appointed Assistant City Solicitor of Philadelphia in 1858 and held that position until 1861. In 1865, he became counsel for numerous Railroad companies (which eventually consolidated in to the Union Traction Company) and continued as Solicitor for the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Company and General Counsel for the American Surety Company. Active in Democratic politics, Sellers also served as a Commissioner of Fairmount Park.
