McCall was a lawyer, politician and educator. He had a private legal practice for nearly 50 years and served as Chancellor of the Philadelphia Law Association from 1873 to 1880. He served on the Philadelphia City Council and was Mayor of Philadelphia, 1844-1845. He taught in the Law Department of the University of Pennsylvania from 1852 to 1860.
Provenance: The Historic Portrait and Sculpture Collection of the Philadelphia Bar Association
Presented by a committee on behalf of forty-two surviving law students of the Hon. Peter McCall after the portrait was on exhibition in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, spring of 1879.
