A French-born lawyer and criminal court judge, John Bouvier is most remembered for his legal dictionary, A Law Dictionary (1839), believed to be the first of its kind based on American Law. The latest edition of the work was published in 2012. Bouvier also edited the 1842-1846 edition of Bacon's Abridgement, adding American cases to the annotated encyclopedia of the law.
