Sergeant spent much of his life as a politician in the Federalist and Whig parties. He served as Deputy Attorney General for Chester County and Philadelphia in 1800 and was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1805 and 1807. Sergeant served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1815 to 1823, 1827 to 1829 and 1837 to 1841. A supporter of Henry Clay and the Second Bank and opposed to the extension of slavery, Sergeant ran as Vice President on a ticket with Clay unsuccessfully in 1832. Sergeant was a counsel for the Second Bank. He was Chancellor of the Philadelphia Law Association from 1845 to 1852.
