A lawyer, statesman and scholar, Ingersoll served as a Whig member of the House of Representatives from 1835 to 1837 and 1843 to 1849, and held the position of Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary. In 1852, Ingersoll was sent by President Millard Fillmore to England as U.S. Minister.
