label of Charles Taber and Co., New Bedford, MA, circa 1855 Case decorated with a spreadwing eagle with bannerette inscribed, "Friendship Love and Truth (motto of the Odd Fellows)," above a shield and crossed American and American Union Jack marine flags, octant of ebony and brass with ivory scale and label.

12 1/2 in. x 11 3/4 in.

Charles Taber & Co., Importers and Manufacturers of Nautical Instruments, Charts and Books on Navigation, were located at the Union Street address recorded on the case label from 1849 to 1861.
