NOTE:
Percy Sanborn worked with several different media besides oil on canvas, including theater sets, pottery, murals, as well as newspaper and advertising illustrations. A native of Maine, where he spent most of his life, he is best known for his paintings of ships, such as the present lot. Launched on October 4, 1853, "Great Republic" is noteworthy as the largest wooden clipper ship ever constructed. As per the inscription, the ship was damaged in a fire in 1853. It was quickly rebuilt to sail again on February 24, 1855.
