The obverse with bust of Franklin Pierce, the reverse with settler and Indian in front of American flag and under banner, "Labor Virtue Honor," holed at top and threaded with hide.
Diam: 63 1/2 mm.It is recorded that 128 medals of this size were delivered by the Mint for distribution. Only one other size was made for this president's medal: the larger 76 mm module.
Provenance: The Luther R. and Frances T. Zehner Collection.
According to Dr. Zehner's diary entry from 5/10/50, he "bought an old medal from Leo Cadotte...It was given to Barefoot Boy of the Blackfoot Sioux at the Fort Laramie Treaty in Wyoming in September 1851" and thence descended in the family.
