The tapered, vellum glazed vase painted with geese in flight above marsh, with artist's signature, flame trademark, date mark, shape and size identification number, and glaze notation to underside.
H: 9 3/4 in.Company Founder Maria Longworth Nichols Storer invited Mr. Shirayamadani to join Rookwood Pottery in 1887. The first nonnative decorator at Rookwood and possibly Cincinnati's first Japanese settler, Shirayamadani was known for his refined, nature-inspired designs and later, for his innovative electroplating techniques; he helped Rookwood, and by extension, American ceramics, gain international recognition as his work helped Rookwood earn a gold medal in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universalle.
