The serpentine crestrail centering a shell above a vasiform splat, shaped arms with carved handholds, trapezoidal seat with late 18th/early 19th century needleworked cover depicting vase of flowers enclosed by scrolls, cabriole legs with shell-carved legs ending in ball and claw feet.
Provenance: Estate of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Wister, Oldwick, New Jersey.
Descended in the Wister family to the present owners. The armchair was used in the Wister family ancestral home, Grumblethorpe, in Germantown, Philadelphia, now a National Historic Landmark.
