Eglomisé mat inscribed, "Hannah K. Smalley," watercolor, graphite and ink on paper, the tomb inscribed, "Sacred to the memory of Capt Thomas Smalley who died June 17th, 1831, aged 70 years."

Captain Thomas Smalley was born in Truro, Massachusetts in 1761 and died in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1831. His first wife, Elizabeth Nicholson, died in 1803. His second wife, Hannah Oaks (1776-1861) of Cohasset, may have painted the memorial.

Provenance: Estate of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Wister, Oldwick, New Jersey.
