Restored Composite Flintlock Fowler with a 1779 Dated Nock Marked East India Company Lock

.67 caliber. 53.25" pinned round barrel. SN: NSN. Heavily oxidized metal, brass furniture, hardwood stock with distinct Roman nose profile to the butt. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock long fowler. 5.75" long flint lock with pronounced teat at rear has an integral and fenced rounded , bridled iron pan and a swan neck cock. The steel (frizzen) and mainspring have been replaced and the current spring does not seat in the lock correctly and is loose. The lock plate itself appears to be in original flint, despite the incorrect mainspring and frizzen. The lock is engraved NOCK forward of the cock and with the markings for the 4th East Indian Company regiment at the tail, along with the date 1779. Barrel is unmarked. Endoscopic examination reveals that the barrel is stretched approximately 21". Stock is spliced at the entry pipe and the entire forend is replaced. The brassn furniture includes a Pattern 1740 style triggerguard, a flat 1757 Marine Musket style side plate with an additional screw to secure it to the stock, a stepped tang buttplate and four ramrod thimbles and an entry pipe large enough to accommodate a wooden ramrod, which is a more recent addition. The gun appears to be a period composite fowling piece using a surplus Nock East India Company lock, a barrel of unknown origin and a mix of British military style furniture, that was shortened at some point in time and later had the barrel and forend lengthened.

Good as restored. Smooth bore fair, heavily oxidized and rusted, dark and dirty and with pitting. Barrel lengthened about 21". Metal heavily oxidized throughout, with some pitting, a mostly thick brown patina and some powdery orange surface rust. Lock is not functional. Mainspring does not fit correctly and was loose in the mortise, which is crudely cut to fit the lock. Wood with moderate wear, completely replaced from the entry pipe forward with the thimbles all likely replaced as well. Wood moderate to heavy wear, numerous bumps, dings and mars and some repaired cracks in the region of the lock mortise on both sides.
