The design of this rectangular mosaic, crafted from blue, green, red, yellow, and white tesserae, dates back to as early as the 5th to 4th Century B.C. Its presence in a private residence symbolized luxury and comfortable living. The mosaic features a variety of ornamental patterns tailored to personal tastes and home layouts. Notably, the border of this exquisite piece showcases a three-strand guilloche, where interlaced strands create a three-dimensional effect with intertwining colors.

Inspected under UV light and 10x loupe. Some tesserae broken or missing from antiquity. Scattered insignificant scuffs from handling or antiquity. Metal frame surrounding the edges. Very attractive, fine, and stable condition overall. See additional images.

Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
