Lady Catherine Lowther, Leeds, UK
John Nicholson's Fine Art and Auctioneers, Haslemere, UK
Titan Fine Art, London
Note:
A 19th century handwritten label on the stretcher reads Robert Ramsden of Longley Hall, York. However, the age of the sitter depicted and the style of his costume suggests he is more likely William Ramsden (1558-1623). There does not appear to have been a Robert Ramsden who is congruous with the date of this portrait and the age of the sitter when painted.
Framed dimensions 28 x 24 1/2 inches.
Appearing in overall good, stable, and ready to hang condition. The paint surface having an even pattern of craquelure to the surface consistent with age. Examination under UV light reveals that the entirety of the background, figure's shirt, and hair have been varnished and likely touched up and the face and white ruff collar have been touched up and overpainted in areas. The canvas is re-lined. Additional images are available upon request.
