The paperboard backing retains several labels, including The American Folk Art Gallery, New York City, New York, dated June 8, 1971, and the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas. The American Folk Art Gallery label suggests that the work is from the Collection of Mrs. Charles Sheeler, likely the second wife of the American Modernist painter Charles Sheeler (1883-1965).
The backing also retains a small handwritten label inscribed Ex Edith Halpert Coll., likely the American Modernist and Folk Art dealer Edith Gregor Halpert (1900-1970), who sold Charles Sheeler's work at her New York City gallery, Downtown Gallery.
Framed: 14 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches.
In overall fine and stable condition. Even toning to sheet, the edges exhibiting acid burn, handling wear, and few tears/losses. Flyspeck present to upper right corner. Horizontal creasing across tree just below center, with repaired tear to lower right edge. Staining present over figure in yellow at lower right. Few minor areas of paint loss throughout.
