Thomas Whitticomb executed multiple versions of this engagement, an important naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars, including the original drawing after which this is copied, reproduced in 1812 by George Andrews at the Marine Print Warehouse, London, and a large-scale oil on canvas painting, held by the National Maritime Museum, Royal Museums Greenwich, London (BHC0594).
The Royal Navy frigate Spartan, captained by Jahleel Brenton, was cruising off the island of Ischia in pursuit of a French squadron. The ships were sited, and Brenton gave chase, entering the Bay of Naples on May 3, 1810. Captain Brenton was gravely wounded early in the battle but still managed to command his men successfully: the crew of the Spartan ultimately boarded and captured the French brig Spaviere and inflicted serious damage to the other vessels.
