Josiah Kirby (1883-1964) was a fellow Cincinnati-born industrialist and politician, prominently serving as president of the Cincinnati Board of Trade and as an Ohio state senator. He and Julius Fleischmann were undoubtedly aware of each other if not personally or professionally acquainted. Following a business failure in Wyoming, Ohio, Kirby relocated to Cleveland in 1911, where he formed the Cleveland Discount Co. and oversaw the operations of the Cleveland Yacht Club (1918-1920). His business dealings, while initially successful, became circumspect, and he was tried and convicted of multiple counts of mail fraud, conspiracy, market rigging, and jury tampering throughout the early to mid-twentieth century.
