Beyond a Cincinnati Legacy: The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fleischmann III, Part I

Craquelure visible to the work throughout. Light surface abrasion visible in few minor areas.  The canvas is laid to a ply board panel that is backed by an aluminum sheet.  A thin band of acrylic or resin is added around the edges to help stretch the work over the edges of the backing. The Wiebold conservation report, dated October 8, 1985, shows the following: a removal of old varnish; relining adhesive is beeswax, dammar resin, gum Elemis, paraffin; the new support is aluminum honey comb core panel; voids and tears repaired with vinyl paste; in-painting using acrylate methacrylate; the backing being properly secured, kraft dust shield added and replaced hanger cable.
Examination under UV shows overpainting to the green shutters in the background, to the girl’s right and left shoulders, the right most side of her dress, the inside of her left elbow, her shoe buckle; the boy shows touch up to the nose, cheeks and jaw line, as well as his hands and the doll he is holding.  There are two circular areas, each about 3” in diameter that are also touched up, one at the lower right of the urn just above the decorated sockle, then again a few inches below that on the column the urn is resting on.
