Note:
Very few clocks signed by Ambrose Gardner are known. Gardner is mentioned in R.W. Symonds's book Thomas Tompion: His Life and Work, as being a member of Tompion's household. Tompion's apprentices included Ambrose Gardner, who was Foreman of Tompion's workshop, and other renowned clocksmiths. The present clock is very much in the manner of the Master himself, and was probably made in Tompion's workshop under his supervision. For a similar example, see Bonhams, London, Fine Clocks, 16 December 2015, Lot 41.
Overall fine condition; not tested for functionality. The winding key appears to be of the period. There is no key to open the back of the clock case.
