Octavo album (5 1/4 x 6 3/4 in.) containing 37 CDVs of civilians and soldiers (toning and soiling to some CDVs; edge and corner wear to mounts, some trimmed; surface wear and loss to album). Cover with gilt inscription, "Presented to William V. Hopkins, 1864."

The album contains 7 CDVs of Civil War soldiers, many identified by period notation on verso, including: Standing portrait of a Union officer and single-amputee, with his hat and coat draped on the chair beside him. Newark, NJ: Kennedy & Schenck (edges trimmed). Although unidentified, the subject may be William V. Hopkins, the recipient of the album. Hopkins enlisted with Co. K, 76th New York Volunteers, and was WIA at Gettysburg, PA (7/1/1863). -- Charles A. Watkins, Captain, Co. C, 76th New York Volunteers. Uncredited (identified on verso). -- Hubert Carpenter, identified as "Ajt. Carpenter" on verso, 76th New York Volunteers. Uncredited. Carpenter was WIA Fredericksburg, VA (12/13/1862), WIA Gettysburg (7/1/1863), POW Wilderness, VA (5/6/1864), WIA Wilderness, VA (5/6/1864), died of wounds (5/8/1864). -- E. Eaman, Co. F, 111th New York Volunteers. 3/4 x 1 in. tintype on cardstock mount. Uncredited (identified on verso). -- Rev. William C. Way, Chaplain, 24th Michigan Volunteers. Uncredited (some soiling to print). With period identification on verso, and notation that the image was "given to me while at Fredericksburg, May 1864." Way was a Methodist minister in Plymouth, MI at the start of the war. His wife Eliza accompanied him in the field for several months during the war, including a period of weeks following the 24th's involvement at Gettysburg while both cared for the wounded and dying. During his service, he was a correspondent for the Detroit Tribune. -- F.C. Loomis (last name difficult to discern). 3/4 x 1 in. tintype of who appears to be a Civil War soldier, on cardstock mount.
