FIRST EDITION memoirs of Mary Eastman's time at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. She accompanied her husband Captain Seth Eastman (whose illustrations are reproduced in lithograph here) when he was stationed there in 1841. While there, she learned the Sioux language and became immersed in their customs and religion which she writes about in this early ethnographic work. Field 479; Piling 1122; Sabin 21685.

Governor Faulk later inscribes the book to his daughter Henrietta: "Again presented to Etta by her affectionate father, May 31, 1898.
