Cassilly Adams (1843-1921) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and he attended the Boston Academy of Art and the Cincinnati Art School before serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was notably wounded while aboard the USS Osage at the Battle of Vicksburg. He returned to his art after the war, working in St. Louis, and eventually creating the work for which he is best known, Custer's Last Fight (1884-85).
