29 7/8 x 21 7/8 in. chromolithographic print, laid down on heavy paper (restored, with extensive in-painting around all edges, as well as bottom title and imprint). 

The chromolithograph features a portrait of abolitionist Frederick Douglass at center, flanked by portraits of the first two African American Senators in the United States, Blanche Kelso Bruce and Hiram Rhoades Revels. They are surrounded by vignettes representing African American life before and after the Civil War. Each corner features portraits of African American legislators, including John. R. Lynch, Joseph H. Rainey, Charles E. Nash, and Robert Smalls. A spread-winged eagle is presented at the top, perched upon patriotic banners featuring portraits of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Garfield, and a portrait of abolitionist John Brown is included at bottom.
