An extract presumably from the second edition of Churchill's Collection of Voyages and Travels, including information about Captain James Hall's fourth expedition to Greenland. Captain Hall was killed by the Inuit on the west coast of Greenland during the voyage. That expedition was the first recorded voyage of William Baffin, who served as chief pilot. RARE.

Folio (356 x 220 mm). Modern wrappers. Provenance: Collector's bookplate, a few pencil marks. James's voyage was an early attempt to discover the Northwest Passage. He "wintered unhappily and to little purpose in the extreme southeastern dip of (Hudson's) Bay, and the account of the voyage is verily a 'book of lamentation and weeping and great mourning" (Mirsky, To the Arctic, p. 64).
