A pair of views of Saint-Louis, Senegal, showing a multitude of people on the near side of the Senegal River, and the city structures on the other side in the background. N.p.: n.p., [1870] (one image with heavy spotting which appears to be in the negative, the other with a clipped edge; both with toning and wear to mounts). Both images feature the same period ink inscription on verso reading: "St. Louis and market place in 'Guch En Dar on the Senegal River West Coast of Africa October 12th 1870." Saint-Louis is located on what is known as N'Dar Island. -- Studio portrait of a young African male seated and holding a bow, spear, and shield. New York: Gurney & Son, n.d. (light spotting, clipped edges and corners). -- Illustration of an African man wearing what appears to be a costume made of long feathers, and holding some kind of long blade or horn in one hand. N.p.: n.p., [1870]. Pencil inscriptions to verso include "Warrior of Cajor" and a notation identifying the image to Saint-Louis, Senegal, and dating it to September of 1870. -- Together, 4 CDVs featuring African subjects, each 2 1/8 x 3 1/2 in. or larger, on cardstock mounts.

Ms. Horstman has spent over a decade specializing in historic photography and Americana at auction. During her tenure, she has overseen several notable single owner auctions, including property from the inventory of celebrated Americana and antique arms expert Norm Flayderman. During her time with the firm, she has maintained an active membership in the Daguerreian Society. Ms. Horstman holds an MA in Art History from the University of Cincinnati and a BA in Art History from The Ohio State University.
