GALLAGHER, Thomas Foster (1822-1883). Document signed (“Thos. F. Gallagher”). N.p., 15 August 1862. 16 x 10 in. partly printed document. With additional affixed affidavit from the Adjutant General's office. 25 August 1862.

Partly printed pay voucher including the pay for 2 private servants. Servants listed as Thomas Taylor and Boyez Johnston, both with black complexion, eyes, and hair.

Gallagher enlisted as a colonel with the 40th Pennsylvania Infantry. POW, exchanged 15 August 1862. WIA South Mountain, MD, 9/14/1862, discharged on 12/12/1862. Re-enlisted on 6/30/1863 into 54th Pennsylvania Infantry, mustered out 8/17/1863. 11th Pennsylvania Reserves (not detailed). Brevet brig-general 3/13/1865.

[With:] Partly printed pay voucher signed ("James Lowery"). Dane County, WI, 2 September 1865. 16 1/2 x 11 in. Includes his Black servant named Moses Jackson. -- Partly printed receipt. Madison, WI, 2 September 1865. Recording property returned to the Mustering Office. 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. -- Partly printed Adjutant General's office memo. Madison, WI, 2 September 1865. 4 7/8 x 7 3/8 in. -- Together, 3 documents attached together, old folds with creasing, some tape repairs.

Lowery enlisted on 13 January 1862 as a first sergeant and mustered into Co. D of the 19th Wisconsin Infantry on the same day. Promoted to second lieutenant 29 March 1864, later to captain on 23 May 1865. WIA and POW at Fair Oaks, VA on 27 October 1864.
