[CIVIL WAR]. Three manuscripts related to an enslaved man named "Bob" who died working on Confederate fortifications on James Island. 1863.

PRESCOTT, William. Autograph letter signed ("W.F. Prescott"), to W.D. Jennings. Hamburg, SC, 29 November 1864. [With:] JENNINGS, W.D. Autograph letter signed ("W.D. Jennings"). [Edgefield, SC], 2 December 1864. 1 page, 8vo, 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 in., both letters on the same sheet, toned, some brown spotting, brittle edges.

Captain Prescott writes with enclosed papers to "establish the fact that I did send my boy Bob to the Coast that he did die there of disease contracted whilst there and the appraise [sic] value has been fixed by F.W. Burt and B.M. Talbert at $3000."

In response, Jennings forwards the letter, noting that Prescott is "in the Army" and seeking compensation.

An affidavit attesting that "the Negro Boy Bob, sent to the coast to work on the Fortifications, belonging to Wm. F. Prescott...was worth Three Thousand Dolls."

[Also with:] Manuscript affidavit. Edgefield District, SC, 3 December 1865. 1 page, 7 7/8 x 4 7/8 in., toned, old creases. Affidavit signed by Captain B.T. Mims that "he delivered the Slave Bob belonging to Capt. William Prescott, to work on the fort defenses."

A William F. Prescott enlisted as a captain in Co. I of the 7th South Carolina Infantry, possibly the same enslaver seeking compensation here.
