Estimate$2,500 – $3,500
Provenance:
Sold: Sloans & Kenyon Auctioneers and Appraisers, Chevy Chase, Maryland, November 15, 2009, Lot 1375.
Acquired at the above sale by the present owner.
In overall fine, stable condition. There is a heavy yellow tinge to the entire painted surface. It's unclear if this is due to smoke exposure or a varnish or other issues, but it is not the original tone of the work. Cleaning or other conservation/restoration would be necessary to remove the tinge. The painting nonetheless presents well. There are small areas to the figures in the boat at left, and to the hull of the ship at left, where the paint appears darker under UV light, possibly due to inpainting. Frame in sturdy, attractive condition.
The physical condition of lots in our auctions can vary due to age, normal wear and tear, previous damage, and restoration/repair. Condition reports prepared by Freeman's staff are provided as a convenience and may be requested from the Department prior to bidding.
The absence of a posted condition report on the Freeman's website or in our catalogues should not be interpreted as commentary on an item's condition. Prospective buyers are responsible for inspecting a lot or sending their agent or conservator to inspect the lot on their behalf, and for ensuring that they have requested, received and understood any condition report provided by Freeman's.
