Depicted here is the Nile God Hapi wearing a crown incorporating papyrus and lotus. In ancient Egypt, Hapi personified the annual inundation of the Nile River. The arrival of fertile soil by-way-of the flood was imperative for growing crops to sustain the economy and livelihood of the ancient Egyptians. For that reason, Hapi was associated with fertility and illustrated as having both male and female bodily attributes, as can be seen on this relief.

Inspected under UV light and 10x loupe. Repaired from large fragments with infill present; restoration to part of the proper left arm from the wrist to middle of upper arm. Old chips in the surface and around the edges; edges are uneven. Surface wear, weathering, and discolorations as is typical with age. Old holes have been drilled on the back, possibility from a mount (no longer present). Overall in fine and stable condition.

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
