Circa 500-1000 A.D.

Height 1 7/8 inches (4.8 cm).

Property from a New York Collection

Provenance:

Acquired from Enrique Vargas Alfaro, 22 August 1984. Mr. Alfaro was the source of high quality Pre-Columbian art sold to prestigious collections such as Andre Emmerich, Morton D. May, Frederick and Jan Mayer, and William C. and Carol W. Thibadeau. Artworks listing him as provenance appear in the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, The Denver Art Museum, and the William C. Carlos Museum.

Intact as preserved. Inspected under UV light and 10x loupe. Overall surface wear, as is typical with age; professional surface cleaning performed during laboratory examination (report included). Minuscule pitting or chipping can be seen under the loupe; chipping to the back along the middle of the plaque. Some soil or sediment within the crevices or chips. White inventory label affixed to the back with tape reading, "60735" in black ink. Old tape adhesive present under the label which fluoresces under UV light. Held in a modern metal base, not permanently affixed. Overall in very attractive and stable condition.

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
