[CIVIL WAR]. CDV and leather haversack identified to Union Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Stedman, 42nd Massachusetts Regiment Volunteer Militia. Previously acquired from the Property of Norm Flayderman.

11 1/2 x 12 in. leather haversack (surface wear, particularly to edges, wear consistent with age and use). Leather interior stamped, "Lt. Col. J. Stedman / 42 Regt. Mass. V.M." Provenance: Ex. Property of Norm Flayderman (printed Flayderman & Co. envelope containing Colonel Stedman's military records).

Joseph Stedman was working as a Civil Engineer before enlisting as a private and mustering into Company B, 6th Massachusetts Infantry in April 1861. He was promoted sergeant in May, but mustered out of the 6th MA in August of 1861. Stedman was then commissioned into Company B, 42nd Massachusetts Infantry, in September 1862, later being promoted to lieutenant colonel in November. In July of 1864, Stedman mustered into Field & Staff, 42nd MA as a lieutenant colonel, and mustered out in November 1864. He resided in Jamaica Plains, MA, following the war, before passing away in Watkins, NY, 16 May 1898.
