Note:

A drawing in red chalk by Robert that was possibly a study for the present lot is featured opposite page 24 in Hubert Robert 1733-1808 by Pierre de Nolhac. The drawing is titled Hof einer italienischen Gartenvilla, von der Fontana dell'Organo der Villa d'Este in Tivoli inspiriert (Courtyard of an Italian Garden Villa Inspired by the Fontana dell'Organo of the Villa d'Este in Tivoli) and is in the collection of the Albertina Museum in Vienna. When the present lot was sold at Christie's New York in November 2000, the lot essay noted that the painting would be included under "Related Works" in the then forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Hubert Robert by Joseph Baillio in conjunction with The Wildenstein Institute, Paris.

Frame: 30 3/4 x 38 3/8 inches. With Christie's and Harari & Johns Ltd. paper labels to the reverse. In good, stable condition overall. Light craquelure throughout commensurate with age; paint layer is relatively dark. Horizontal line of brown discoloration spanning the upper-horizontal edge of the visible canvas. Minor abrasions to the paint layer in the upper-right corner. Examination under UV light reveals a fairly even varnish and instances of inpainting throughout.
