Darius Sullivan, of Newark, IL, enlisted on 18 September 1861 as a 2nd lieutenant and was commissioned into Company K of the 8th Illinois Cavalry. He was promoted to Captain on 29 June 1863, as recorded here. He mustered out on 18 September 1864. The 8th Illinois Cavalry served for the duration of the war and saw extensive action data major battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, and Gettysburg. At the close, they also helped in the pursuit of assassin John Wilkes Booth.

John C. Armstrong, of Pinckneyville, IL, enlisted as a captain on 26 August 1862 and was commissioned into Company C of the 81st Illinois Infantry, as recorded in this commission document. The 81st Illinois saw extensive action during the Vicksburg campaign. Armstrong resigned his commission on 9 July 1865.
