The present lot references the Russian Imperial Family's fascination with Baccarat during the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the turn of the twentieth century. The Romanovs commissioned several impressive articles by the manufacturer to furnish their grand palaces. Tsar Alexander II visited the Baccarat stand at the Paris Exposition of 1867, which resulted in an order of several pieces for the private apartments of his wife, Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna. This example is modelled after one of the Tsar's many other commissions.
