Estimate$3,000 – $5,000
Note:
Carved figures of Renaissance page boys such as the present lot were made by the Venetian atelier of Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829-1902), a renowned producer of decorative arts in the second half of the nineteenth century. The design for similar figures has been attributed to such sculptors as Luigi de Paoli, Goffredo Sommavilla and Luigi Cima, each of whom apprenticed at the Besarel atelier prior to their respective independent careers. The figures were carved to don late medieval style dress, a more romanticized than historically accurate interpretation of Renaissance page boy uniforms.
