Though General Douglas MacArthur was leading Allied forces against Japan at the time, some Republican conservatives supported his 1944 candidacy for the Republican nomination on the presidential ticket. MacArthur remained popular with many after WWII, and was again encouraged to run in the 1952 presidential election.
