FIRST EDITION of Harrison's defense of his tenure as minister plenipotentiary to Gran Colombia. Appointed to the position in 1828, he failed to maintain a position of neutrality during his tenure, publicly and frequently opposing Simón Bolivar. Harrison reported that the country was on the edge of anarchy with Bolivar poised to become a military dictator. He wrote Bolivar an extensive letter, published here, imploring him "adhere to the tenets of republicanism." Bolivar quipped in response that the United States "seems destined by Providence to plague America with torments in the name of freedom." Upon Andrew Jackson's inauguration, he recalled Harrison to make his own appointment. Harrison published this pamphlet promptly upon his return. RARE: OCLC locates only 3 copies. Includes the report that Harrison was returning from his post, his way home, and the salary he was to be allowed. The Committee determines that due to complications returning home that an extension of 3-months salary was appropriate.
