Comme des Garçons Two-Piece Pant Ensemble, Fall 1996

Rei Kawakubo played in bright color for the Fall 1996 ‘Flowering Clothes’ collection. She exhibited brocaded velvets, noted by Vogue as a nod to the Old Masters, an evocation of old-world luxury in contrast to her typical deconstruction. This ensemble’s jacket appears to be a traditional velvet, while the pants, having a wide barrel leg, are anachronistic in technique with adhered flocking, rather than true cut pile velvet.
