Note.

This limestone portrait head of a young woman is Hellenistic in date, and Cypriot in style. She has an idealized face articulated with small mouth and slightly open lips, smooth cheeks, almond-shaped eyes, and broad forehead. Her wavy hair is parted at the center, swept back to the ears, surmounted by a diadem, and covered in a long veil. She wears disk earrings with grape pendants—symbols of fertility. Traces of the originally painted pupils are preserved in the left eye. The soft surface, heavy-lidded eyes, and Venus rings along the neck impart a sensuous look to this elegant beauty. Intact as preserved. The proper left ear and right side of the nose lost. Surface chips (from antiquity) along the left side of the face and several large chips from the tip of the chin. A black scuff mark on the proper right side of the head near the front. The underside drilled and with a modern base.

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
