Note:

This bronze situla is of the Hajdú Böszörmény type, which is named after the city in Hungry where two of these bucket-shaped vessels were first found in 1862. It is made from three sheets of hammered bronze held together by rivets. For a similar vessel found in Jutland, Denmark, see a bronze vessel (National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen, Inv. no. 20419).

Inspected under UV light, 10x loupe, and acetone tested. Crack to the rim. Areas of verdigris and elements of oxidization; no signs of bronze disease. Some professional restoration to the base and upper rim. Encrustations found near handle and ancient rivets. Overall fine, stable condition. Diameter 10.6 inches (27 cm); diameter with handle 12.5 inches (32 cm).

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
