Private Art Collections

Private and corporate art collections sell better when promoted and marketed as a complete and unique collection. That belief is at the heart of Freeman’s approach to providing our unique auctioneering services. From the research and scholarly essays to tell the stories behind the objects and the collectors themselves, to the tailored marketing and presentation to let the world see them at their best, we throw ourselves into each project wholeheartedly.

Freeman’s believes that even the most everyday item is lifted in value by its association with an illustrious collection. The latter idea has been a consistent experience throughout the auction house’s over 200 year history; an item often achieves a far greater price when sold as a part of unique collection than if sold individually or anonymously. As America’s oldest auction house, there are few types of collections that Freeman’s has not handled -- from jewelry and paintings to Chinese antiquities, rare books and battle flags.

Our specialists work closely with clients to ensure that all elements of a private art collection sale reflect personal taste and values. A bespoke approach to every collection has placed the auction house among the field’s market leaders, and a dedicated senior international team uses a wealth of experience to orchestrate successful sales.

Freeman's  is the ideal place to bring collection items for appraisal. Specialists provide written reports to meet a full range of client needs: for estate tax purposes, equitable distribution, inventory listings, estate planning, divorce settlement, charitable contribution, and insurance. Freeman’s works closely with attorneys, estate attorneys, fiduciaries, financial planners, estate administrators, accountants, executors or executrixes, and with trust officers of banks, to prepare the needed document in a timely and efficient manner. All reports are USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) compliant, satisfy IRS and state tax requirements, and contain a detailed, illustrated inventory.
