Biography

Benjamin Truesdale is the head of Freeman’s department of Books, Maps, and Manuscripts. His areas of interest and professional specialization include Greek and Latin language, literature, and paleography; Patristic theology and Early Christian literature; and historiography, in general.

Ben first joined the Book Department at Freeman’s in January, 2015, as recipient of the Samuel M. Freeman II Fellowship. He is a bibliophile by nature and an ancient historian by training, holding a B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD (a.k.a “The Great Books School”); a M.Div. in Patristics from the Union Theological Seminary at Columbia in NY, NY; and an M.A. in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania. Ben attended the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, as a Regular Member (2011-2012), and he is currently “A.B.D.” in the Graduate Group for Ancient History at Penn; his Ph.D. dissertation focuses on the historiographical strategies of Eusebius of Caesarea and other Early Christian intellectuals.

In addition to his position at Freeman’s, Ben is residential caretaker for a 1785 Colonial house museum in Delaware County. He collects books, records, and cats; enjoys woodcraft and drawing; and plays drums in two Philadelphia-based bands.
