A One-of-a-Kind Timeline

“There's some mystique within these walls that helps people produce art.” - Stanley Bard

Cartoonist and New Jersey native Sam Grinberg currently lives in Los Angeles, where he works as a Production Assistant for “The Simpsons.” He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating in 2013 with a BFA in Cartooning, before pursuing his Masters in Animation at UCLA in 2015. His work has been featured on Curbed, and in a variety of comic anthologies as well as Daily Bruin, the student newspaper at UCLA. His illustrations for Curbed include a series titled “Culture and Chaos: A Comic History of the Hotel Chelsea.”

The Chelsea Hotel by Sam GrinbergEarlier this spring, Freeman’s commissioned Grinberg to complete a comic timeline of the iconic hotel, to be included in the catalogue for the forthcoming sale, The Stanley Bard Collection: A Life at the Chelsea. Translating the building’s colorful 135-year history into a visual narrative was no small feat. Grinberg’s final design wonderfully captures the unique spirit of the New York landmark, while still maintaining a very clear vision all his own.

“Stanley Bard nurtured and appreciated artists; he established an environment at the Chelsea Hotel that facilitated the development of creative talents,” said Creative Director Whitney Bounty. “We thought it would be most appropriate—and seemed in keeping with the spirit of the building itself—to commission new artwork from a young artist specifically for this auction catalogue.”

Grinberg’s comic can be viewed in the upcoming printed catalogue for the May 16th sale of The Stanley Bard Collection: A Life at the Chelsea. Exhibition opens to the public in Philadelphia on May 11th.
