It Takes a Classic to Know One | Art + Design

Since 1805, Freeman’s has offered important historic design from some of the most celebrated collections in America.  The storied auction house still operates out of 1808 Chestnut Street in center city Philadelphia, the first custom-built auction house in America, erected in 1924.  Designed by École-trained architects H. Bartol Register and Marmaduke Tilden Jr. in the neo-Palladian style, 1808 Chestnut has always operated by Design for Design.

Freeman’s inaugural sale of modern art and design, titled Art + Deisgn and slated for March 20, 2016,  is a continuum of Freeman’s long commitment to the applied and decorative arts, with a particular focus on Pennsylvania and important American Design.  Works by American design icons George Nakashima and Charles & Ray Eames will be offered alongside art nouveau and fin de siècle glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Emile Galle, respectively. The sale will also offer postwar Scandinavian and Italian design as well as a selection of contemporary studio works in ceramic, glass and metalwork.

The sale will also showcase a carefully curated selection of graphic works with a special emphasis on bold color interactions, geometric compositions and abstract patterns. Consignments of works by prominent modern and contemporary artists such as Bridget Riley, Frank Stella, Edna Andrade, Thomas Chimes, Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Yaacov Agam and Kenneth Noland are being sought for this new auction. Freeman’s has functioned as a venue for the successful sale of these artists in the past, yet now provides a unique platform for which to highlight their bold graphic aesthetic.

Art + Design will feature a variety of works at varying price points for advanced and new collectors alike.
