Works from the Estate of Betty Rhoads Wright to be Featured in February Auction

Freeman’s is pleased to offer fine furnishing from the Estate of Betty Rhoads Wright, noted collector and philanthropist of Old Town, Alexandra, Virginia as part of our February 22 auction Estates at 1808.  Mrs. Wright was widely recognized for devoting her time to helping others and improving the community. Together with her husband, Frank Lester Wright, the couple formed the Wright to Read foundation, which promotes literacy skills through mentoring and tutoring programs for elementary school children in the city of Alexandria.

An assembled set of twelve George III style mahogany dining chairs from The Estate of Betty Rhoads Wright Dedicated to historic preservation, in 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Wright purchased the historic home in Alexandria known as “The Doctor William Brown House,”  which was built originally for the Surgeon General of the American Revolution and author of the first American Pharmacopeia.  The Wrights outfitted their home with fine art and antiques appropriate for their historic home. The selection of items from Mrs. Wright’s collection to be offered at Freeman’s include objects such as English and American furniture, fine art, porcelain and Japanese woodblock prints.

Select works from this collection have met with great success at recent auctions, including those of American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists and European Art & Old Masters. Most notably, the December 2015 auction of Silver & Objets de Vertu saw strong results for a rare and important cased set of George II silver caddies, Paul de Lamerie, London, 1736-37, which sold for $68,750 as well as a fine pair of Regency silver covered soup tureens with liners, Paul Storr, London, 1811-12, which brought $62,500.
